Before & After School
A Success Program That Makes A Difference
At the J. R. Coleman before and after school program for elementary students we work to ensure that children are engaged in a balanced and paralleled school curriculum after school, during summer and on school holidays, in a safe and high quality environment. We provide opportunities for school age children that help them maintain and/or improve academic performance and gain developmental assets.
Regular and consistent attendance is critical to achieving this outcome.
We are open Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. during the school year, for holiday school closings, and over the summer months. Transportation between school and the J. R. Coleman Center may be available.
We work with parents, school teachers, principals, and students to ensure that learning doesn't end when the school day or the school year ends. We work to instill personal assets identified by the Search Institute as powerful predictors of future success. The more assets young people have, the more likely they are to:
Succeed in school by getting mostly A's
Pay attention to healthy nutrition and exercise
 Avoid doing dangerous things
Save money instead of spending it right away
 Be a leader....not a follower
 Help friends or neighbors
Value getting to know people of many racial/ethnic groups
Refuse to give up when things get difficult
There are eight asset categories included in the Search Institute's approach:
Support, Empowerment, Boundaries & Expectations, Constructive Use of Time, Commitment to Learning, Positive Values, Social Competencies, and Positive Identity.
According to the Search Institute, surveys of 6th to 12th grade youth consistently show that the more assets young people experience, the more likely they are to make positive choices and avoid high-risk behaviors. Yet, on average, young people experience only 18 of the identified 40 developmental assets. At J. R. Coleman we begin to incorporate asset development in our preschool classrooms and continue in earnest once children start school.
WE FOCUS ON RESULTS
In addition to surveys from students, teachers, and parents on assets such as Thinking Ahead, I'm in Control, I Make and Keep Friends, etc. that measure progress on developmental assets, we are getting input from parents and teachers and using report cards to focus in on what needs reinforced after school and in the summer months. Lesson plans, homework assistance, and tutoring are provided accordingly. We seek to maintain or improve academic performance for children attending our Center.
Join us in helping young adults and children learn to make wise decisions and choose positive paths. Along with parents, you can help assist them in growing up competent, caring and responsible. Contact us!
On school days, the hours from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. are peak hours for kids to smoke, drink, do drugs, and engage in sex, and for innocent kids to become crime victims. The placement of after-school prevention programs in urban areas has led to steady declines in juvenile arrests and juvenile crime. (www.everychildmatters.org).
