Building Healthy Neighborhoods
One of the strategic goals of the J. R. Coleman organizations is to contribute to the economic development of the community. We have invested millions of dollars in our Early Learning Center, our Senior Center Campus, our Senior Housing, and other areas of this community. We have a strong interest in ensuring that our employees have a good environment to work in, that children, seniors, and families have a clean and healthy neighborhood to be educated and served in, and that our investments are protected for future generations.
It's About Neighborhood Stability
Our current strategic plan calls for us to actively and overtly seek out and pursue ways to improve Economic and Community Development for the northeast quadrant of the city of Canton. Toward that end we employ the Building Healthy Neighborhoods approach described by David Boehlke in Great Neighborhoods, Great City published by the Goldseker Foundation.
This approach recognizes that "The most effective revitalization strategies target four elements that profoundly affect neighborhood stability: "The positive or negative image that defines the neighborhood, the viability and particular characteristics of the neighborhood's real estate market, the quantity and quality of improvement to and maintenance of the physical conditions of individual houses and public spaces, and the strength of the social connections among neighbors and with local institutions." Building Healthy Neighborhoods reflects the following principles:
• Healthy Neighborhoods builds assets
• Healthy Neighborhoods focuses on markets
• Healthy Neighborhoods targets outcomes
• Healthy Neighborhoods values neighbors as investors and leaders
The strategies we employ are defined by our strategic plan and change as our plan is revisited and revised. They include implementing the Mahoning Road Corridor Economic Development Project, working with the Department of Justice and Canton City Police Department to ensure safety in the neighborhood, and maintaining our own facilities to a high standard.
