Senior Services
Aging Redefined
You've heard the saying '80 is the new 60' OR '60 is the new 40'? We've not only heard it, we keep adapting to it. More and more seniors are taking better care of themselves, living longer, and staying healthier as they age.
Over the past thirty-five years the J. R. Coleman Senior Services Programs have constantly been brought up-to-date with the changing needs of the older population. As the baby boom generation becomes old enough to collect social security in 2011, they are redefining what it means to be an older American. Some won't retire for many years, some will enter new careers, some will find new and exciting ways to volunteer, travel, or have fun. Many will be caring for elderly parents and some will do that as well as care for children still living at home. Some will need community supports to get them back on their feet after an illness, surgery, or injury. Our goal will always be to honor and respect our elderly population in ways that enhance their independence and dignity.
Every time a senior citizen attends our adult day program and every time we modify a bathroom or install a wheelchair ramp so that a senior can be safe in their home environment...in their own neighborhood...we help them stay independent. These are social benefits but there are economic benefits to all of us as well. Home and community based care is far less expensive than nursing home care. A senior attending the J. R. Coleman adult day program five days a week for a month would spend less than $1,000. Nursing home care in Ohio is running over $5,000 a month. Home and community based care should only be used when appropriate. But when it is the appropriate option, the tax dollars saved can be monumental. And let's face it...all of us want to live at home with those we love for as long as we can.
We are proud of our work and partnership with the Area Agency on Aging and United Way of Greater Stark County who help us provide high quality service at a reasonable cost.
